Why have a Dyslexia Assessment?
What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a common neurodevelopmental learning difficulty that affects reading, writing, and spelling. It is not a measure of intelligence but rather reflects unique brain processing of language. Understanding dyslexia is vital for creating inclusive environments that empower all learners. Dyslexia is a lifelong condition, but with the right support, individuals can develop strategies to manage their challenges effectively. It often coexists with other conditions such as attention, focus, concentration and motor skills difficulties.
In the UK, dyslexia is defined as, “Dyslexia is a set of processing difficulties that affect the acquisition of reading and spelling. ” The Delphi definition of dyslexia, (2025). Kirby, P., Holden, C., Thompson, P. A., Snowling, M., & Carroll, J. (2025, February 25)
People with dyslexia might struggle with:
Recognising and decoding words | Spelling and Writing | Processing and Remembering Information | Organisation and Sequencing
How Common is Dyslexia in the UK?
Dyslexia affects approximately 10% of the UK population, with around 4% experiencing severe difficulties. It is one of the most common learning difficulties, often diagnosed in childhood but sometimes only identified in adulthood. Dyslexia can run in families.

Assessment
The Comprehensive Dyslexia Assessment Process (Age 8+ and into adulthood)
A comprehensive diagnostic dyslexia assessment is an important first step in ensuring that individuals with dyslexia receive the appropriate specialist support, strategies, and interventions needed for success and progress. It also provides a deeper understanding of their unique learning style, fostering self-confidence and a sense of control over their learning journey.
Prior to the assessment itself, background information is requested so that a holistic view of the individuals strengths and challenges are thoroughly considered.
SpLD Assessment Standards Committee (SASC) guidelines compliant. If a diagnosis of dyslexia is identified that diagnosis is for life.
It includes a series of tests that evaluate the individual’s current reading, spelling, and handwriting abilities, as well as phonological memory, phonological awareness, processing speed, and visual and verbal skills. Observations regarding the person’s learning style and problem-solving skills are also included.
Typically a child diagnostic assessment fee is £495.00 and an adult diagnostic assessment fee is £545.00.
If dyslexia is diagnosed, the report will provide a clear diagnosis supported by evidence, along with a comprehensive understanding of the individual’s strengths and weaknesses, and the impact on their educational or workplace setting. If dyslexia is not diagnosed, the report will still include recommendations for supporting the individual.
If relevant, it will also detail suggestions for exam concessions, such as additional time, a reader, or a scribe. The assessment might also highlight signs of other specific learning difficulties, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), or visual impairments that are not typically detected by a standard eye test. The report will discuss these and recommend further action. If relevant, the report will also detail suggestions for exam concessions, such as additional time, a reader, or a scribe.
It will also support applications for Access to Work.
If a child is experiencing difficulties at school, it is always a good idea to check for problems with eyesight or hearing. If this has not been done recently—within the last two years —get these checked by a registered optometrist.
Identify your child’s difficulties. Write a list of your child’s difficulties. Include all their difficulties both at home and school (for example, speech, clumsiness, poor short-term memory, etc). Always discuss your concerns with your child’s school.
